Governor of New Mexico. After receiving a law degree from Syracuse University in 1910, he established a private practice in Gallup, New Mexico. He becme involved in Democratic politics and seerved as city attorney of Gallup; food administrator of McKinley county, New Mexico; mayor of Gallup; and chairman of the New Mexico Highway Commission. He was elected governor on November 4, 1924 with the strong backing of organized labor. Because of his ties with organized labor, Republicans portrayed him as a radical with communist ties. He proposed a drastic revision of the New Mexico election laws which made his term very contentious and became the focus of his re-election campaign in 1926. He was defeated by Richard C. Dillon by 3,771 votes and returned to his investments and private legal practice.
