He was the son of Otis Smith and Jessie Smith. He had one sister Orpha Heselden Underwood. He married Roberta Stone Smith on May 24 1934 in Knoxville. They had four sons Larry, Jerry, Tom, and Ronald (who died at birth) Smith. He worked as a machinist at Gale Products for 30 years, retiring in 1975. He also worked as an attendent on weekends and some evenings for Jim Godsil at his service station. Also belonged to Lake Braken Country Club and took care of golf greens there. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the OMC Retirees. He was treasure for the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
