Staff Sgt. Amilcar H. Gonzalez of Miami, Florida, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. He died May 21 in Ash Shura, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. Amilcar enlisted in the Army a week after the 9-11 attacks on the United States and served all of his time at Fort Stewart, deploying to Iraq four times. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. His previous awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, the Army Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with Six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Valorous Unit Award, the Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Army Good Conduct Medal (second award. He is survived by his parents, Ana and Amilcar and his brother, Jonathan.
