Daughter of William Andrew Jackson Hughes and Rhoda Gilbert.Wife of Newell Oxford. Mother of William Bert, Claude Francis, Homer Lacey, Marian Hughes Oxford, Rhoda Ella, Jackie Van, Bernedette, Arthur Roy, Linda Joyce, Shannon Reece, John Lee, and Nina Marie. Aunt 'Sudie' bore the brunt of four of her children dying during her lifetime. William Bert died as an infant. Rhoda Ella was killed at 17 months when run over by a cotton trailer at the gin. In December 1964 Johnny and Nina were killed at ages 12 and 8, respectively, as they played, digging into the side of a hill inside of a sand quarry. It caved in on them. Shannon,13, was buried also but was rescued not breathing but revived by the rescue workers summoned by sister Linda,17, who witnessed the accident. I was 12 and had never experienced death so close in the family. They had moved to California a year or so before the accident, while we still lived in Texas.
