Mrs. Olive Long Cooper, 95, of Natchitoches died at 7:00 a.m. Friday, January 8, 1981 [sic 1982], at the Natchitoches Parish Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 10, in the chapel of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches with Reverend Paul Bigger officiating. Burial followed in the Winnfield City Cemetery in Winnfield.
Mrs. Cooper was born in Winnfield on April 17, 1886, the daughter of Caledonia Tyson and Huey P. Long, Sr. Her brothers, all deceased, were U.S. Senator and Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long, Governor Earl K. Long, Congressman George S. Long and Shreveport attorney Julius Long. The late Mrs. Charlotte Davis of Ruston was her sister.
Her husband, Edward Cooper, is also deceased.
She earned a bachelor's degree in art from Northwestern and a master's degree from Columbia University in New York.
Mrs. Cooper moved to Natchitoches in 1928 to head Northwestern's Art Department. Her work has been exhibited in many of the state's art centers, including the Cabildo in New Orleans.
She was active in civic affairs. She established the Natchitoches Art League, City Beautification Foundation, organized the Natchitoches St. Denis Spring Arts Festival and was a charter member of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jackson P. Ducournau of New Orleans; a sister, Mrs. Lucille Long Hunt of Ruston; and one grandson.
Pallbearers were Alfred Ducournau, John Ducournau, Jack Ducournau, Jimmy Long, Jeff DeBlieux and Robert Nix.
