Inscription

Land of my adoption where the loved sleep folded in the embrace of your flowers. Would that it were my destiny to increase the flood tide of your glory, as it has been mine to share your fortunes: For when my years tremble to their close, I would sleep beneath your soil where the drip of april tears may fall upon my grave; and the sunshine of your skies warm southern flowers to bloom upon my breast. (From a commencement address he delivered in 1879.)
