Rites Held Friday For Gustav Ponto
Funeral services for Gustav A. Ponto, rural Brookings, were conducted in First Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Friday, Rev. John F. Nelson officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Ponto died Tuesday evening in the Volga Rest Home, Volga, following a long illness. He was born Aug. 20, 1869 in Germany, the son of Martin and Albertina Ponto.
He came to the United States at the age of three and lived at Brando, Wis., with his parents. In 1878, the family moved to a farm near Rochester, Minn., and in 1899 he moved to his farm in Moody County, spending the remainder of his life on that farm.
He married Clara Louise Wenzel Nov. 26, 1891 in Rochester, Minn., and was a resident of the United States 88 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Farmers Coop, charter member of Community Oil Co., and served 20 years on the school board.
Surviving are five sons, William, Ed, Alvin and Home of Bookings and Leslie of Minneapolis; three daughters, Mrs. Tillie Schwark, Brookings, Mrs. Claude (Ruth) Acheson, Colman, and Mrs. Joel (Margret) Sterud, Brookings; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were Jerry Acheson, David Acheson, James Sterud, Harlan Ponto, Eugene Ponto and Warren Ponto. Honorary pallbearers were William Hagensick, Nan Goldhorn, Alfred Crowell, Fred Hinkley, Floyd Durland and Carl Quail.
