The son of Peter & Nancy (Tyson) Goodling, in 1860 he was a laborer living in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York June 17, 1863, and mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 23 as a private with Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion. Promoted to corporal August 23, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company October 3, 1863, at Chambersburg, Franklin County.

He married Christiana M. Ness and fathered Emeline (b. 10/21/53 - married Charles Mittendorf), Isabella (b. 01/15/55 - married Charles W. Zorger), Ambrose (b. 10/26/56), Eliza (b. 05/06/58 - married James Buchanan Peeling), Charles N. (b. 09/??/62), Maria N. (b. 01/02/66 - married an Erwin), and Paul P. (b. 03/02/66); [NOTE: the two previous children's birth dates are as reported on their death certificates, although at least one of them must be wrong].
