Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1849 graduate of Columbian College (now George Washington University), Washington, DC, he read law and was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar Association before moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served as Allegheny County District Attorney from 1856 to 1859. When the Civil War began he helped recruit a regiment of infantry that became the 139th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and he was commissioned its Colonel and commander on September 1, 1862. He would remain Colonel of unit through the rest of the war, and was often in brigade command. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war", and was honorably mustered out on November 27, 1865. In 1869 After the war he was elected Judge of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, serving from 1869 to 1899.
