Bert was the son of the famous Indian scout and White Mountain pioneer Corydon E Cooley and his wife Molly. Colonel H B Wharfield noted in one of his books that Bert was born in 1892, but his death certificate states he was 36 when he died. That means he was born c. 1888. Bert is rumored to have married a Pima Apache woman and if so, any offspring of that marriage is unknown. He did marry Pearl Hughey and they had a daughter, Dorothy. Bert is buried in the Cooley Mountain Cemetery, once known as the Cooley Family Cemetery, and located across the road from the Cooley family home. Like some other members of the family, the location of the grave has been lost and is unmarked today.
