Charles "Chuck" A. Traeger, 96, of Springfield died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, June 20, 2010, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.

He was born November 17, 1913, in LaSalle, IL to Charles and Alma (Holtz) Traeger. He married Esther Marie Netznik on March 27, 1938, and she preceded him in death on June 6, 1985. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alma Abbott; and two brothers, Otto and Ralph Traeger.

Chuck is survived by his daughter, Janet (husband, Robert) Schick of Lee's Summit, MO, one son, Charles (wife, Sylvia) Traeger of Lancaster, PA; two grandchildren, Todd Schick and Suzanne (husband, Christopher) Dickey; a great-grandchild, Kadence Renee Dickey; his twin sisters, Evelyne Traeger and Shirley Ross, both of Springfield; two brothers, Raymond (wife, Helen) Traeger and Albert (wife, Ann) Traeger, both of Springfield; two sisters-in-law, Rena Traeger of Oglesby and Ceci Traeger of Springfield; two brothers-in-law, Russell Abbott of Springfield and Robert Netznik of Ft. Wayne, IN; his best friend, Toby; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Elks Club for over 40 years, is a member of the Springfield bowling Hall of Fame and received several national ABC honors. Chuck was a softball and hardball pitcher and was a member of the 1935, 36, 37, and 39 Federal Life Ins. City Champions. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid fisherman, a diehard Cubs fan and enjoyed all sports. Charles retired in 1979 from Pillsbury Mills as a grain miller.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Chuck will lie in state from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2010, at St. John's Lutheran Church, followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral service, with Pastor Paul Olson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, or Animal Protective League Waggin Tails Shelter.
