There is a newspaper article that says William Barbour sat on this rock at Cranberry Lake on his way from Dover to Newton. William was just a poor boy who had recently arrived here. He ate his lunch on the rock that day and pondered the idea that the rock would make a beautiful monument. Fifty years later, he paid $10,000 to buy the rock and have it transported to Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The rock was transported by train, but was so large, it had to be cut down by about 30 tons.
