Albany Vindicator (Albany, WI), May 14, 1903
Hiram P. Hulburt was born in Manlius, Onandaga County, New York on July 31, 1837. He removed with his parents to Green County, where he remained until manhood when he married Emma Newcomb and removed to Howard County, Iowa. Later he moved to Clay County, Iowa where his wife died. By this union five children were born: Lillian, now Mrs. William Wooley; Ione; Evelyn, now Mrs. T.R. Amlie; H.H. and Emma, deceased. His second marriage was to Mary Arbuckle a daughter of one of the early settlers of O'Brien County. One son, Milo, was the only child and his mother died when he was five days old. His third wife was Julia Kirchner, youngest daughter of Christian Kirchner of Peterson, Iowa. Two children Jettie and Orpha were born to them. For about two years, he resided in Minneapolis with his children. The last few months he has been at his old home in Peterson making some improvements on his farm when he was stricken down with pneumonia and died on April 26. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 3:00 from the Congregational Church with Rev. Zellehofer, a Baptist minister of Florence, Colorado officiating. One brother, Lorrain, of Albany, Wisconsin, attended the services. Another brother, John, who was very sick at the time, and his only sister Mrs. Lydia Kellogg of Seattle, Washington, were unable to attend. He was buried by the side of one of his wives in a beautiful spot on the hill north of town. Mr. Hulburt was a man of iron constitution, fully fitted to brave the toils and hardships incident to pioneer life, a man of upright character and leaves behind the memory of one who was an exemplary citizen, a kind and loving husband and a just parent.
