Sgt. Johnny W. Lumpkin, 38, of Columbus, Ga., died July 2 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained July 1 in a non-combat related equipment incident in Taji, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. He is the son of Wayne Ross Lumpkin and Janice Barton Lumpkin. Serving active duty in the U.S. Army for the past six years, he honorably served in Germany, Korea, and Iraq and received the Bronze Star; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal (1OLC); Iraq Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star; Global war on Terrorism Service Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; and many other notable medals and ribbons for heroic and faithful service to his country. SGT Lumpkin was Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by his materal grandfather, Lewis Barton and mother-in-law, Ursula Locey.
