Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry in May 1861, but resigned a month later, having been commissioned a Captain in the 11th United States Regular Infantry. He was soon tabbed as a staff officer, serving as an Acting Assistant Inspector General first for Major General George Sykes, then for Brigadier General Romeyn B. Ayres. On April 15, 1864 he was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 102nd United States Colored Infantry, who he led through the end of the war. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war", he was mustered out of the Volunteer service in September 1865, and reverted back to his Regular Army rank. He remained in the army until his retirement in 1887 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
