Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1845 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was a Captain in the 3rd United States Regular Infantry when the Civil War began. Promoted to Major of the 12th United States Regular Infantry on May 14, 1861, he was wounded in action and taken prisoner by Confederate forces at the June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines Mill during the Seven Days Battles. He was exchanged in a prisoner swap with the Confederate States Army for Major Washington Lafayette Doss, who was promoted to colonel after the swap) After his exchange he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th United States Regular Infantry, and was assigned as Commandant of Cadets at West Point. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and distinguished services in the field." He remained in the Army after the conclusion of the war, and retired in 1885 with the rank of Colonel. In October 1888 he left his residence in Detroit, Michigan, and was last seen at Niagara Falls, New York on October 30, 1888. He was never seen again, and it was assumed he committed suicide by drowning in the falls. His family erected a cenotaph for him in their family plot in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit.
