Evelyn L. Bottino, 88, of Streator, died at 4:07 p.m. Friday, July 2, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Streator.

Funeral services for Evelyn Bottino will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Elias Funeral Home in Streator. The Rev. Ron Dodd of St. Stephen's Catholic Church will officiate and also conduct graveside services at Riverview Cemetery in Streator. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Elias Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bottino was born July 26, 1921, in Streator. She was the daughter of George and Anna (Kacvinsky) Handzus. She married Louis Bottino Aug. 16, 1941. He survives.

Also surviving are daughters, Marilyn (Ray T.) Spencer of Divernon, Marcia (Arthur) Burkett of Batavia, Linda (Greg) Carpenter of Streator; grandchildren Carolyn Brown, Tracey Shaw, Paul Burkett, Gina Miller, Carrie Schafer, Kris Freese and Amy Porter; 11 great-grandchildren; her sister, Martha Bandura of Streator; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers Jack, Andrew, Edward and Ricky Handzus; sisters, Mary and Helen Handzus, Ann Sauers Elizabeth Elko; and a granddaughter, Susanna Spencer.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Streator.

If you asked mom, she would say her flower garden was her heaven on earth and if she had the choice she would never leave it. In her stead she left behind a wonderland of buttercups, peonies, poppies, roses and her favorite zinnias. Robins, cardinals, sparrows and an occasional blue jay frequented her bird feeder and refreshed themselves at her birdbath. In her last years, she still found great pleasure in the incessant chatter and unexpected camaraderie as she surveyed her garden from her kitchen window.

A poet at heart, she composed four songs in her early 20s, each once espousing love as its main centerpiece. Our home was filled with the sound of laughter. She looked at the sunny side of life but couldn't tell a joke to save her soul. She had a beautiful singing voice and she and our dad would entertain us with songs from the 1940s as they whirled around the living room to the beat of the big bands.

Mom never outgrew her childlike pleasures as evidence by her abundant collection of dolls, games and fast-food collectibles. She taught us the skills of roller skating, ice skating and baseball. She introduced us to nature by planting a vegetable garden and flower beds as well as fruit trees. A life-long White Sox fan, she never wavered in her alliance and always cheered them on no matter what their stats were for the season. She had an unfailing trust in God and called on Him in times of need. She once wrote to her granddaughter, "I've been praying to God for a new roof. He says 'ask and you will receive.' But I guess sometimes you just have to wait your turn." Her rosary was her constant companion. It gave her comfort and peace and always lifted her spirits. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be loved, missed and remembered in our hearts.
