William Harrison Singletary (b. 3-18-1850 near Andersonville, Macon County, Georgia; d. 5-6-1899 near Sentinel, Washita County, Oklahoma Territory---Buried on a low ridge in a family cemetery 4 miles due west of Sentinel, Oklahoma).

He married Sarah Emily "Sallie" Looney (b. 4-7-1859 near Goodletsville, Davidson County, Tennessee; d. 6-9-1897 near Sentinel, Washita County, Oklahoma Territory--buried in the family cemetery on a low ridge 4 miles due west of Sentinel, Oklahoma), daughter of William Russell Looney and Sarah Emily Elam, on 12-9-1877 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas.

They lived in Brown County, Texas from 1877 to 1892. Two infant sons and one infant daughter are buried there in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in addition to "Sallie's" mother, Sarah Emily Elam-Looney and her father, William Russell Looney.

The family moved from a farm approximately 12 miles north of Brownwood, Texas to Washita County, Oklahoma Territory in the Fall of 1892, settling near the Combs post office four miles west of present-day Sentinel.

They lived on the NW ¼, Section 19, Range 19, Township 8. The family gravesite is on that very parcel of land on a low ridge marked by a large lilac bush that can be seen outlined in the sky from a great distance. All available data indicates there are four family members buried there---William Harrison, Sarah Emily, an infant son and an infant daughter.

(In the early 1990's, gravestones were placed on the site.)

William H., a Deputy Sheriff during the sometimes-violent 1890's in the new territory, was shot and killed in 1899 by Sid Davidson, a drunk cattleman, while making an arrest in old Combs. "Sallie" had died of complications following the birth of a stillborn child just two years earlier. Their untimely deaths left five minor children without parents. They had ten children including five infant deaths---three boys and two girls.

The five who survived were named Clarence Preston, Robert Alexander, Herman Leroy, Ina Isola and Ernest Rayfield.
William H. Singletary, along with his wife Sarah E. Singletary, homesteaded the NE 1/4 of Section 19, Township 8 N, Range 19 W, in Elk Township, Washita County, OK. 4 miles west of the town of Sentinel, in 1893. Unfortunately neither he nor his wife lived long enough to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Sarah died in 1897, just four years later, and was buried on the property. William died in 1899 and was buried beside his wife Sarah.
