MRS. CATHERINE CARTER

Many friends here will learn with deep regret of the death of Mrs. Catherine Carter, which occurred on Sunday, August 6th, 1916, at the home of her daughter in Terre Haute, Indiana, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 23 days.

On July 30th, while walking in the yard, she stumbled over some shrubbery and fell and broke her hip. On account of her advanced age she was unable to recover from the shock, and on Sunday passed peacefully away.

The remains were brought to Chariton, and yesterday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock, brief funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. J. Gilmore, of the Christian church, were held at Beardsley's undertaking parlors, after which interment took place in the Chariton cemetery.

Catherine Miller was born in Bartholomew county, Indiana, on February 14th, 1831. She was married there in 1853 to Wm. Carter. To them ten children were born, seven of whom are living. They are James A., Mrs. Mattie Gillaspey and Lester, of Des Moines; Mrs. Hattie Elmore and Mrs. Lila Elmore, of Terre Haute, Indiana; Robert Finley, of Gilman, Ill.; Ed G., of Columbus, Nebr. All were present at the last sad rites yesterday.

In 1855, sixty-one years ago, the family came to Lucas county, Iowa, making the trip in a wagon. They resided west of this city for many years and after the death of Mr. Carter on January 5th, 1892, they moved to Chariton. For a few years past, Mrs. Carter had been spending the time with her children. She had been a member of the Christian church for many years and lived a faithful, consistent Christian life.

During her long residence in this county, by her many loving attributes, she won the friendship and regard of all with whom she came in contact. The children who survive her will have the heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends here.
