Obituary. Preston County Journal. Kingwood, WV. Thur., July 5, 1923.
Excerpt -- Samuel W. Hartley, aged and respected resident of this community, died at the home of his brother, H. P. Hartley, at Beaver, Pa., Monday afternoon about 4 o'clock. Apoplexy was the cause of death. Mr. Hartley was in his usual health until Sunday, when he became slightly ill. His serious condition did not develop until Monday. Death followed a few hours after the stroke. Mr. and Mrs. Guy B. Hartley were visiting Beaver at the time of Mr. Hartley's father's illness and were at his bedside when the end came.
The body was brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lee T. Lancaster, of South Walnut Street, where he had made his home since the death of his wife six years ago. Short funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Lancaster home with burial in the M. E. church cemetery at Masontown.
Mr. Hartley was 78 years of age and was the fifth of a family of eight children, a son of the late Peter M. Hartley. Surviving are four brothers, H. A. Hartley of Masontown, J. M. Hartley of Fairmont, L.E. Hartley of Springfield, Mass., and H. P. Hartley of Beaver, Pa.; and the following children: A. C. Hartley of Morgantown, L. C. Hartley of Chicago, Mrs. L. T. Lancaster of Morgantown, G. B. Hartley of Fairmont; and 17 grandchildren.
