On 9 Sept 1864, he enlisted in the Michigan 7th Cavalry Regiment, Company E, at Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan. He mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 17 July 1865.
After the war, he returned home and married Eliza M. Phillips on 1 Jan 1873 in Oneida, Eaton County. Together, they raised two daughters, Lela M and Rena B. They lost a third daughter, Jessie L., when she was but three years old.
George worked farms in Eaton County, Clinton County (Watertown) & Charlevoix County.
He is buried together with his wife and his daughters Jessie and Lela.
