Death Comes To Lewis Ganzel, 81

Funeral Services for Former Commissioner Will be Thursday


Lewis Ganzel, 81, native of Otoe and a former member of the Otoe county board, died at his home a half mile east of Otoe at 10 p.m. Saturday after suffering a sudden heart attack. He was only ill since Saturday morning.

Mr. Ganzel, who appeared in good health when he was in Nebraska City only a few days ago., was born December 27, 1860, at Otoe, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ganzel, on March 8, 1882, he married Sarah Ellen Paap, who died April 4, 1918. On November 29, 1930, Mr. Ganzel married Mrs. Anna Salsow, who survives.

Mr. Ganzel was a farmer and a member of the Methodist Church. He served two terms on the county board, was a member of the District 70 school board for 35 years and was one of the oldest members of the Otoe Methodist Church. The church was organized in 1860 and Mr. Ganzel was the first baby baptized in it. He was a member of the church board for 50 years and was Sunday School superintendent for 21 years.

Eight children survive: Chester at Otoe; Mrs. Clyde Skinner, Boulder, Colo.; Dr. Arnold Ganzel, Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Otto Hackman, Lincoln; Mrs. Albert Hackman, San Jose, Cal.; Lloyd at Otoe; Alvin at Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Ray Polster, St. Louis, Mo. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Otoe Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon with Rev. D.J. Sampson and Rev. R.L. Winkler in charge. Pallbearers will be nephews, Adolph, Earnest, Ben and Robert Ganzel and Herbert Ottens and Marvin Brant. Burial will be in East Union cemetery at Otoe.

The body was removed to the Porter funeral home.
