Bobby Joe Martin, 83, passed away Feb. 27, 2009, at the Carriage House of Greensburg, Kansas. He was born on July 27, 1925 in Attica, Kansas and attended Attica Grade and High Schools until 1942 when he joined the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the 460th Bomber Group and served on the B24 crew as nose gunner during WWII. He was stationed in Italy, Greece, France, and Germany until 1945.

Bob moved to the Haviland area in 1950 where he met and married Helen Parkin on March 7, 1952. They ranched and lived in the Greensburg area until his death. Bob trained and showed cutting horses from 1966 to 1985 and served as president of the Kansas Cutting Horse Association. He also enjoyed working in his shop making items out of metal and wood. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and Shriner.

He served as Master at the Masonic Lodge, president of the VFW Post, commander of the American Legion and president of the Kiowa County Gun Club, all of Greensburg. He was an avid trap shooter and member of the Kansas Trap Shooters Association where he holds the record for the senior veteran shooter; a record that can never be broken, only tied.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Lysle and Bessie Martin, a sister Claudine Pyle, a brother Harold “Buddy” Martin and nephew Craig Melton.

He is survived by his wife Helen; brother, Raymond “Shorty” and wife Patty of Poteet, Texas; sisters, Peggy Colborn and husband Don of Salina, Helen Melton and husband Bob of Lake Lotawana Mo., and Cora Martin of Pratt; 13 nieces and nephews as well as numerous great-nieces and -nephews. 

Graveside services and interment were at Fairview Cemetery of Greensburg with his brother, Reverend Raymond Martin, presiding.
