Opera Singer. A soprano who sang throughout Europe, she achieved her greatest success in Germany. Born Dolores de Padilla, she was trained by her mother, soprano Desiree Artot, apparently inheriting her parents' talent, though not Desiree's explosive temper. Lola made her operatic bow at Wiesbaden in 1902 as the title character of Ambrose Thomas' "Mignon", and from 1905 until 1908 was a regular at the Komische Oper Berlin before moving to the Imperial Opera, where she remained from 1909 until 1927. In 1907, she created the role of Juliet in Frederick Delius' "A Village Romeo and Juliet". Over her career she gained renown in two Richard Strauss works, as Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier" and as the Composer in "Ariadne auf Naxos". Lola was a noted Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" (her father, baritone Mariano Padilla y Ramos, had been respected in the title role), and sang both Cherubino and the Countess in the same composer's "The Marriage of Figaro". Her other roles included Marie in Bedric Smetana's "The Bartered Bride", Oscar in Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera", Micaela from Georges Bizet's "Carmen", and Charlotte of Jules Massenet's "Werther". In later years, she taught voice in Berlin. Her birth year is sometimes given as 1880.
