He is nationally noted for more than 500 images he created of Native Americans, mostly Sioux, in 1898 or 1899. Copies of the photographs are in the Library of Congress, and original prints are highly sought by collectors. Herman operated as Lumiere Studio in the early 1900s. His images of William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan are preserved in the Library of Congress and Minnesota Historical Society, respectively.
