Amos Eaton was a natural scientist, lawyer, author and educator. In 1824, he co-founded The Rensselaer School in Troy, New York, which eventually evolved into today's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, one of America's top engineering universities.
Among Eaton's most lasting contributions to higher education was his idea to replace the then-current system of learning by rote, to one of making students learn by doing.
