(special thanks to Steve for the following info) Stone at Evergreen is for your Captain John H Morgan and that the memorial in Desoto County, Mississippi is a cenotaph. There is a photo of the Evergreen stone which shows a "T", probably the end of CAPT, his name, that he was in the 5th Mississippi Regiment, and that he was 24 years 2 months old at death (born ca Oct 31, 1838). The age matches the 1850 and 1860 census records for him. He was 11 at the 1850 census enumerated on 7 October and 11 at the 1860 census enumerated ca 1 June. I do have permission to remove enough soil to expose the inscription and will get to it later this week if the weather cooperates. Most of the CSA soldiers killed at Stones River were buried on the battlefield and later removed to the Old Confederate Cemetery. This location frequently flooded. Land was acquired at Evergreen in 1888 for the Confederate Circle and the remains were moved from the old cemetery to Evergreen in 1891.
