Son of Robert Coffee Barling and Matilda Elizabeth Hill. Grandson of Rebecca Tucker and Aaron Barling. His grandfather, a soldier originally posted to Fort Gibson in Indian Territory, subsequently farmed in Arkansas and established the community of Barling, in Sebastian County.
