Almost a Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 9, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 11 as a private with Co. A, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but procured and paid for a substitute and shortly thereafter was discharged.
He married Elizabeth Glatfelter in 1863 and fathered William Henry (b. 12/05/64*), James Andrew (b. 01/21/66), Jacob F. (b. 10/16/67), John Robert (b. 02/08/72, d. 09/18/73), and Ida S. (b. @1874). He died one hour after suffering an attack of "apoplexy."
