She was educated at Vassar (1878) through the generous contributions of an aunt. After several years of teaching school, Martha Hillard was invited back to Vassar as an instructor. Martha left Vassar and became the principal of Rockford Seminary in Rockford, Illinois and later served as President of Rockford College. Martha served as president of the National Women's Mission and the Chicago Women's Club.
