Lawrence Russell Dewey, 93, a retired Army major general who also had worked as a consultant and for the Central Intelligence Agency, died Dec. 18 at his home in Washington.

Gen. Dewey was a native of Des Moines. He was commissioned in the cavalry after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Before World War II, his assignments included the 3rd Cavalry, also known as the Old Guard, at Fort Myer.

During World War II, he served in Europe and North Africa with the 1st and 2nd Armored divisions, becoming the head of a combat command. After the war, he was a student and instructor at the National War College and did staff work with NATO. During the Korean War, he was chief of staff of IX Corps.

Gen. Dewey held staff posts in the United States and military assistance posts in Europe and Turkey. He retired from active duty as chief of the Army Audit Agency in 1961. For the next two years, he served on the CIA board of estimates, then was a consultant with the Research Analysis Corp. until retiring in 1965.

Gen. Dewey's military decorations included two Distinguished Service medals, the Silver and Bronze stars and the Purple Heart. He had been a trophy-winning polo player during his Army days.

Survivors included his wife of 63 years, Florence Rodman Powers Dewey of Washington; two sons, retired Army Col. Lawrence Jr., of Wintergreen, Va., and Donald H., of Washington; two daughters, Elizabeth Dewey Vance of Charlotte, N.C., and Florence Dewey Hughes of Washington; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
