Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted into the Union Army in 1862 and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 63rd New York Volunteer Infantry. He was with the 63rd New York in all it's engagements the entire war, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in command. For his gallantry at the Battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war".
