H. G. BOWERS
DIES IN HOME HERE,
AGED 83

Hon. Harvey G. Bowers, former Senator from the
37th district of Pennsylvania,
ex county treasurer, banker, lumberman, coal operator
and an outstanding citizen of Punxsutawney and vicinity his entire life, died at 8; 15 o'clock this morning in his home on East Mahoning Street, aged 83 years.

After his retirement from the office of county treasurer, January 1, 1946, age began to make its inroads on his always rugged health and for several weeks his condition had been such that death, the end of a long and fruitful life,
was not unexpected when it came.

A member of one of the oldest families in Jefferson County,
Mr. Bowers was born in Winslow, Gaskill Township, November 20, 1864, the son of Jacob K. and Ellen Rhoades Bowers.
He attended the township school and when a very young man come to Punxsutawney to engage in the coal and lumber business in both of which he was markedly successful.

During his long business career he operated with others the
Bowers Brothers Coal Co., later the Bowersville Coal Co,
the Banks Coal Co., The Pratt Coal Co., the Arthur Coal Co.,
the Straitwell Coal Co., the Hamilton Coal Co., the Pansy Coal Co., and numerous others.
He at one time operated the Punxsutawney Planing mill on the present site of
the Kurtz coal, Lumber and Supply Company operation' was president of the Cloe the administration of the Weber Memorial Training School. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church.

The most civic minded of men his philanthropy knew no limits in the days of his affluence. Kindly, considerate always, friendly in the extreme, his acquaintanceship was wide and thousands knew him as a friend to whom they
could turn for material assistance and for counsel.
He maintained his standard of life on an exceptional plane and his refusal to compromise his conscience brought him the sincere and lasting respect of his fellows the while it cost him greatly in material things.
His death brings to a close a life that will leave its impression on the community for many years; life so lived that it gained for him the love and the great respect
of his fellows.

Friends will be received in the Morrison Funeral Home here after 7 o'clock Tuesday
evening. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at
2 o'clock there with burial in the family plot in Circle Hill Cemetery.
