Annemarie Bertel was born in 1896 as the daughter of the actor and k. u. k. Court photographer Eduard Bertel born in Salzburg.

She was a friend of the family of Fritz Kohlrausch, who carried out radioactivity measurements in the vicinity of Seeham am Mattsee in 1913, and through Kohlrausch's mediation she met his colleague Erwin Schrödinger - when she was still a teenager.

The relationship between Annemarie and Erwin developed only slowly (partly due to Schrödinger's long-term military service), but in the spring of 1920 it had progressed so far that the two decided to marry.

Schrödinger earned very little as a young private lecturer, and during this time the couple was economically dependent on Annemarie, who worked as a secretary for an insurance company.

Although Erwin was not averse to adventures with other women, Annemarie stayed with him and followed him on his varied professional paths and emigrated to Ireland. The marriage lasted until Schrödinger's death in 1961. - Annemarie Schrödinger née Bertel died in Vienna in 1965.
