Born to Levi Phillips and Juliann (Jones) Denson. He married Julia Virden on 29 September 1870 in Cleburne County AL. I'm not positive, but I believe Julia Virden was a sister to James John Virden, who was married to James Denson's sister, Julia O (Denson) Virden. There were seven children born to this union: Elizabeth A. (Lizzie), Patience Eldora (Dora), Martha E. (Mattie), William Marcus, Delia, James Jr, and Ollie Denson. He was a brother to Seaborn McDaniel Denson and Thomas Jackson Denson, who were active in the teaching of Sacred Harp music throughout Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
