David Coulter Ballantine was born in Missouri. In 1863 he migrated to Montana where he was involved in mining and cattle ranching. Bt 1863, he moved to eastern Nebraska where he worked in the lumber business. He married Ena Raymonde (born Annie Eliza Palmer) and they moved to her property on Medicine Creek, Frontier County, NE. They had two children David Coulter Ballantine, Jr. (1876-1959) and Annie Ena Ballantine (1881-1976). David died while trying to board a moving train in 1882.
