Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Tours, France. He was married to a New York heiresswhen the Civil War Began. He took out American citizenship and entered the service as Colonel of the 55th New York Infantry, later known as the "Lafayette Guard." He fought on the Peninsula in 1862 as a regimental commander and as a brigade commander at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where he defended Dan Sickles' center at The Wheatfield. After Gettysburg, not much of the III Corps was left, and it was consolidated into the II Corps where he was assigned another brigade until he was promoted to a division command. Commissioned Brigadier General, US Volunteers in January 1864 and then Major General by brevet on April 9, 1865.
