Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 125th New York Volunteer Infantry on August 27, 1862, and would go on to serve with the unit during most of it's existence. He was with his men on September 15, 1862 at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, when the town was captured by Confederate forces just prior to the Battle of Antietam. Paroled the next day and eventually exchanged, he was in command of the regiment at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. There, the 125th New York's Colonel, George L. Willard, was in command of brigade when he was killed in action on the 2nd Day of the engagement (July 2, 1863). When the fighting was over and the Union Army claimed victory, Levin Crandell was promoted to Colonel to replace the fallen Colonel Willard. During the 1864 Overland Campaign, he was at the head of his men at Petersburg, Virginia when he was shot in the face on June 16, 1864. He eventually recovered but was discharged due to disability on November 29, 1864.
