Death: Apr. 27, 1915

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as a First Sergeant in Company A, 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. His citation reads “Running ahead of the line, under a concentrated fire, he shot the color bearer of a Confederate regiment on the works, thus contributing to the success of the attack”. His deed was performed on the Second Day of the Battle, and was a counter-charge to a massive attack by the Corps of Confederate General James Longstreet, which had rolled up the Union Army’s Left Flank. Sergeant De Lacy was in command of his Company after its officers were all incapacitated. His capture of the Confederate flag, the colors of the 1st South Carolina Infantry regiment, demoralized the Rebel soldiers who were following it, and ensured a measure of success in the 143rd Pennsylvania’s attack. His Medal was issued on April 24, 1894. During the course of his service he would be promoted up to Captain and commander of Company A. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
