Charles George Bartlett was born Feb 28, 1852 in southwest England in the County of Devon in the small village of Axmouth located on the banks of the Axe estuary which is part of the extensive Jurassic Coast, to Samuel Bartlett and Elizabeth Griffin. His father was a Carpenter.

Jun 13, 1852, Charles was Baptized in the Anglican Church in Axmouth.

VILLAGE OF AXMOUTH
The village is near the mouth of the River Axe, and is about one mile inland, on the east bank of the Axe estuary. The Axmouth Parish extends along the estuary to the sea, and a significant distance to the east. The village is over 1,100 years old. In the will of King Alfred the Great, who died in 899 AD, Axmouth was left to his youngest son Aethelweard. According to Historic England, 'Axmouth was ranked as a major port by the mid-14th century and accounted for 15% of the country's shipping trade'. The remains of a late medieval fishing boat can be seen at low tide in the River Axe, just south-west of the village.

VOYAGE TO AMERICA
Jul 15, 1857, the family departed from Liverpool, England arriving on this date on the Ship 'City of Washington' in New York City. According to The Gould Residence website, the family migrated to Fort Stanley, Canada, then shortly moved to Adrian, Lenawee, Michigan. Years later they moved to California.

Jul 25, 1860 Census, his father is a carpenter in Adrian, Lenawee, Michigan.
In Michigan, Charles was raised, educated and learned his trade of jeweler.

Jul 1, 1870 Census, Charles is a clerk in Dry Goods Store and lives with his parents in Adrian, Michigan.

1873 Charles moved to San Francisco where he worked in a jewelry store.

Dec 1874 he settled in Ventura, California where he bought a jewelry store. His brother Albert joined him some years later.

Aug 2, 1881 Charles married Alice Maria Day (Riggins).
They had two daughters, Effie Anita and Mabel Juanita.
Alice's son Charles S. Riggin from her previous marriage became known as Charley Bartlett.

1882 Charles and Albert opened the Bartlett Music Store in Los Angeles which Albert ran.

1884 California Voter Registration notes he is a Jeweler and is naturalized by virtue of Naturalization of father.

Charles was very active in civics affairs.

Jan 3, 1920 Census, Proprietor Jewelry. Charles, Alice and Housekeeper Kate Weaver live at 1120 Santa Clara St. His mother lives next door with her nurse Mary Campbell.

Jan 8, 1920 Census, his mother Elizabeth Bartlett died at home next door with loving relatives and her faithful companion at her bedside.

Apr 14, 1930 Census, Jewelry Proprietor; They live at 754 East Santa Clara St.; Housekeeper Katherine Weaver lives with them.

Oct 18, 1933, Charles tells his early impressions of Buenaventura for an article in the Morning Free Press.
Charles was nicknamed "The Old Reliable" because of his business methods.
"Always treat folks right, get their confidence and never abuse it."
"Buy right, sell right, work hard and always endeavor to please and your business is made."

Dec 27, 1936, his wife Alice dies.

, Charles is retired, His daughter Effie lives with him at 754 East Santa Clara St.

He was also a talented musician; he founded Bartlett's Minstrels, the Bartlett Cornet Band, Bartlett's Orchestra, and the Ventura City Band.
