Shirley Dafoe graduated from Canton Central School. Shortly before her graduation, her engagement to Leland G. Buffham was announced. On July 28, 1956 she and her sister Betty Dafoe Walls were killed in an automobile accident in Ontario Canada while traveling to her sisters home in Michigan. Betty's husband and daughter were also injured, but her son who was also in the car was unharmed.
