Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, when appointed Colonel of the 104th Ohio Infantry. In September 1862, his unit was assigned to northern Kentucky against a threatened Confederate invasion and was involved in the skirmish at Fort Mitchell. In 1863, he led the 104th Ohio during the Siege of Knoxville, Tennessee and the Atlanta Campaign. Promoted Brigadier General in July 1864, he commanded the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps at the Battle of Franklin capturing more than 1,000 prisoners and seizing 22 Confederate battle flags. In 1865, he participated in the Carolinas Campaign and resigned at the war's end. He returned to Ohio, resumed his political career and became active in community affairs.
