Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Prior to the Civil War, he was a Representative from Illinois, elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving 1857 to 1861. After his term, he organized the 8th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry and was commissioned Colonel in command in September 1861. He led the 8th Illinois Cavalry during the Peninsula Campaign and at the Battle of Williamsburg. In September 1862, he led a cavalry brigade in the Army of the Potomac during the entire Maryland Campaign and for his services was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in December 1862. He resigned his commission in March 1863, when elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1873.
