Memorial. Located on the South Mesa area of US Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, the monument is dedicated to the 6821 US forces whom died during the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima, February 19 to March 26, 1945. The memorial has a large brick platform with a bronze front inscribed tribute plaque and a bronze Iwo Jima Island scultrue on top. The bottom plaque which is embedded in black volcanic sand from the Iwo Jima beach, honors the milestones in the struggle for the island's portal, quaries, airfields and Mt. Suribachi. This monument along with the Korean War Chosin Reservoir Battle Monument, are among the only three memorials on the Marine Base at Camp Pendleton, California.
