Civil War Union Brigadier General. He was a lawyer in practice, when he enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War. Commissioned Colonel of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry, he took part in the Battles of Hoke's Run and Edmunds Ferry. In 1862, by special order of the War Department he reorganized the Wisconsin regiments to a brigade, which he commanded at the Battles of Perryville, Stones River and Chickamauga where he was wounded. Promoted Brigadier General on July 17, 1863, he served on the US Army Court Martial Board and commanded several posts in Tennessee and Alabama until the war's end. After the war, he resumed legal practice in Washington D.C. until his death.
