Civil War Union Brigadier General. A pre-war lawyer and militia officer, he was commissioned as Colonel of the 2nd Pennsylvania (Three-Month) Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, only days after the start of the Civil War. After commanding the regiment as it performed gaurd duty along the Potomac River, he was mustered out in July 1861. After the 77th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was raised in the summer of 1861, Frederick Stumbaugh was commissioned it's Colonel and commander on September 28. Assigned to the Army of the Ohio, he led his men in the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth and Perryville. Commissioned a Brigadier General of Volunteers on November 29, 1862, his tenure at that high rank was brief, as his commission was revoked the following January for unrecorded reasons. Returning to command of the 77th Pennsylvania, he was honorably mustered out on May 15, 1863 by his own request. He later practiced law in Iowa and Kansas before his death in 1897.
