A native of Doon, Co. Limerick, Ireland, Father Patrick "Paddy" Ryan, reportedly spent a decade as a Pallottine missionary in Africa, mainly in Tanzania, before being reassigned, in 1979, to St. William's church in Denver City, Yoakum County, under the late Bishop Leroy Matthiesen of the Amarillo Diocese.

Former dean of studies at the Pallotine Seminary of Thurles, Father Patrick, 49, was found dead at the Sand and Sage Motel in Odessa, Texas, naked, hands tied behind his back and bludgeoned to death.

He was reported missing after he failed to appear at Christmas services at his Denver City church.

Bishop Leroy Matthiesen of Amarillo and Bishop Joseph Fiorenza of San Angelo presided at Ryan's funeral on December 29. Matthiesen called Ryan "yet another martyr." Ryan's body was flown back to Ireland, and interred in the cemetery of his native Doon.
