"ALFRED R. POTTER

Mr. Alfred R. Potter, Past Grand Master of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Pennsylvania, died yesterday morning at his residence, No. 209 East Cheltenham avenue, Germantown. He was born in Syracuse, N. Y., and was about sixty-five years if age. Mr. Potter was, for many years, connected with the firm of Bunting, Durborow & Co., at that time one of the largest auction and commission houses on Market street. He was a cousin of Clarkson Potter, and a nephew of the late Bishop Alonzo Potter, of Pennsylvania, and of the latter's brother, the present venerable bishop of New York.

He was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Order of Odd Fellows, and in both rose through a regular gradation of honors to the exalted position of Grand Master of the state. He was an active member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and filled at Christ Church, Germantown, the offices both of vestryman and warden.

While he was Grand Master of the Masonic Order of this state the corner-stone of the new City Hallw was laid July 4, 1784. The conduct of the ceremonies devolved upon him in the exercise of his high office, and was fulfilled, as were all his duties, with readiness and grace.

After his retirement from the firm of Bunting and Durborow, Mr. Potter, on June 1, 1875, was appointed district agent for this State of the Mutual Beneficial Life Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J., and from that time until within a recent period he was to be found between the hours of ten A. M. and three P. M. regularly at his desk in the office of the agency, which for some time past has been at No. 522 Walnut street. His management of the affairs of the company greatly added to the business and reputation in this city.

A year ago last month Mr. Potter on leaving his office for the Ninth and Green street depot, was severly injured just after stepping into a street car. Another car was approaching from the rear, and the horses came up with so much violence as to drive the pole over the rear dasher and force it through the panels at the end of the car, striking Mr. Potter in the side, fracturing two of his ribs.

To this accident has been added the complication of diseases from which he had since suffered. He recovered, however, from the immediate effects of the injury, and was sufficiently well to enable him to frequently visit his office.

Mr. Potter's death was directly caused by dropsy, which ensued upon his recovery from the attack of pneumonia that resulted from the accident that befell him last year. He leaves a wife, two daughter and two sons, one of the latter being a member of the bar.

Mr. Potter was a member of Philadelphia Lodge, No. 72, A. Y. M., of Harmony Chapter, of St. John's Commandery, K. T., of Merchants' Lodge, No. 237, I. O. O. F., and of other like organizations. He was Right Worthy Grand Master of the A. Y. M. in 1873 and 1874, and Grand HIgh Priest of the Royal Chapter of Pennsylvania in 1875. He was also Grand Master of the Order of Odd Fellows in 1880 and the present year.

In all relations of life he was universally respected for his probity and integrity, and beloved for his affability and courteousness. The funeral, which will be strictly private, will tale place on Monday morning next."
