Susan was a graduate of Berwick Academy, ME. She became a well-known artist, known for her studies of Dutch children.

She was a student of Charles Woodbury in 1888 in Boston at his School Street studio. They married in June, 1890, in South Berwick, Maine. He became a famous marine painter who founded his art school "Ogunquit Summer School" in Ogunquit, Maine, helping to establish the town as an art colony.
In August, 1890, they went on their first European trip to continue their art studies. They spent much of their married life abroad in Holland.

Marcia died on Friday, 11/07/1913, in Ogunquit. Her body was taken to South Berwick on Saturday, at the request of her mother, Susan Maria (Bennett) Oakes. Burial was the following Monday at 2 p.m.. Internment was conducted by Rev. George A. McLucas of Christ Episcopal Church, Salmon Falls. Marcia's husband, Charles, was caught in a blizzard in Chicago & could not make the burial.
