Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. The inventor of the Barbette Depressing Gun Carriage, he was born at sea near Haiti, West Indies and was appointed the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, graduating with the Class of 1812. During the War of 1812 he was brevetted to Captain, Corps of Engineers. From 1833 to 1838, he was the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, and from 1861 to 1865, he was in charge of the defense of San Francisco, California. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "long and faithful services to his country". His son, Gustuvus A. DeRussy, rose to the rank of Brigadier General. Brigadier General Henry J. Hunt and Brevet Major General William A. Nichols were his sons-in-law.
